Budget$4.1 Million in DHS grants awarded in Kentucky

Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear announced last Thursday that 125 projects will receive approximately $4.1 million in grants courtesy of the Department of Homeland Security.

“These projects will strengthen the effectiveness of our first responders as they execute their important mission of protecting Kentuckians when natural and manmade disasters strike,” he said.

Projects receiving funding included first responder training, 911 programs, and the purchase of mobile computers, radios, and bomb detection devices.

Lexington received the largest total grant, with $360,800 going towards robot upgrades for its bomb squad, hazmat detection and monitoring devices, statewide bomb squad training, and statewide hazmat training.

Louisville also received $350,000 for the purchase of a generator for MetroSafe, a local organization responsible for consolidating all citywide emergency communications systems.

According to Gene Kiser, the acting executive director of the Kentucky Office of Homeland Security, local agencies submitted 303 applications totaling $28.1 million.
