In a bid to improve efficiency and security for the Pentagon’s electrical “smart grid,” defense giant Boeing has teamed up with German technology conglomerate Siemens to develop new technologies.

On Monday, the two companies announced a strategic alliance aimed at producing new technologies for the Department of Defense (DoD), the largest consumer of energy in the federal government.

The announcement comes as part of the DoD’s larger efforts to reduce its energy consumption and increase efficiency by experimenting with various alternative energies.

This collaboration will make a real difference in how the DOD uses energy,” said Tim Noonan, vice president of Boeing Energy. “For years, Boeing has developed secure, networked systems vital to the nation’s defense, and bringing this capability to the development of energy security and efficiency is vital for the military’s future. Boeing and Siemens’ combined approach will help provide energy independence and critical infrastructure protection to ensure mission success for the U.S. military, at home and abroad.”

The partnership will leverage Boeing’s experience in developing large systems for the DoD and Siemen’s advanced energy management technologies.

Judy Marks, the head of Siemens U.S. Federal Business, said, “Siemens is the only company worldwide that provides its customers with energy-efficient technologies that enable ‘smart’ production, transmission and consumption.”

“The Siemens and Boeing team has a vision for the United States’ energy future, and we’re committed to helping the DOD achieve unprecedented levels of power reliability, quality, efficiency and energy independence,” she added.

In particular, the two companies will focus on developing technology that will develop smart energy controls to monitor energy usage in real-time, energy-efficiency tools for analysis, control, and automation of energy processes, and the integration of renewable energy sources and storage.
