ICx acquires bio-sensor firm GHC Technologies

Published 19 January 2007

Deal follows an earlier acquisition of Griffin Analytical Technologies; GHC an expert in pathogen detection for both infrastructure and city-wide surveillance; industry consolidation continues

Washington, D.C.-based ICx Technologies’s biodetection division got a little bit bigger this week when it announced that it had acquired La Jolla, California-based GHC Technologies, a developer of technologies for rapid molecular detection of biowarfare agents. This was the second WMD-related acquisition for the comapany, following as it does a recent purchase of West Lafayette, Indiana-based Griffin Analytical Technologies. Griffen, our readers may recall from our report, made a name for itself in the chemical detection field.

The deal with GHC offers ICx an almost immediate competitive advantage. The latter company has made a name for itself in the both the mobile and static WMD market — one of its products is a biological “smoke alarm” — and executives there already have plans afoot to incorporate GHC technology into its full product line. Among current GHC projects (many of which are sponsored by DHS) is a rapid pathogen detector for building security and a highly sensitive pathogen reporter for city-wide surveillance. “The GHC technology will be rapidly integrated into our biodefense solutions targeted at sensing harmful bioagaents in buildings, transportation terminals and public arenas, as well as for frontline military applications,” said company executive David Cullin.
