International conference on piracy to meet in December

A conference scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates is expected to bring together security authorities to address ongoing piracy threats.
The Counter-Piracy and Ship Security 2009 conference, organized by the International Quality and Productivity Center, is part of an effort to develop solutions to counter piracy and other sea crimes in the Middle East and North Africa region.
Scheduled to take place 6-9 December in Dubai, the International Quality and Productivity Center says the conference will host a forum and feature case studies to address complex issues surrounding piracy.
“With maritime piracy costing the world an estimated $60-70 million in 2008 and a worrying rise in sea crimes across the Middle East and North Africa region, it is of the utmost importance for the maritime community to collaborate and cooperate across the military civilian divide to find strategies that can mitigate the risks and minimize the economic impact on the region,” Joanna Edwards, International Quality and Productivity Center Middle East divisional director, said in a statement.
