Business continuity and disaster recoveryNew Indian Point siren system scores high in full test

Test of new alarm siren system in the four counties surrounding the Indian Point nuclear plants in New York produce good grades

People who live in the densley populate area around Indian Point nuclear power plants in Westchester County, New York, would be glad to hear that a full volume test of the new Indian Point siren system Monday evening produced good grades. Entergy spokeswoman Robyn Bentley said only a handful did not function properly. “With 167 sirens in the new system we had five that didn’t pass the test,” she said. They included two in Westchester, two in Rockland and one in Orange County.

The new sirens were activated by the four participating counties and they were sounded in the evening so that residents who work out of the area during the day would have an opportunity to hear what the new sirens sound like, Bentley said. Entergy officials hope to gain federal approval to place the new system online this summer.
