Smiths Detection and Analogic to develop new EDS

Published 11 December 2009

Companies will use their complementary expertise in multi-energy X-ray technology and three-dimensional Computed Tomography (CT) to develop a detection system to be manufactured by Smiths Detection.

Smiths Detection and Analogic Corp. have partnered jointly to develop new threat detection technologies to address evolving airport security needs.

Analogic and Smiths Detection signed a deal to develop new explosive detection systems (EDS) that can be used to meet aviation security standards including new mandates at European airports. Analogic says as part of the two-year agreement it will develop imaging subsystem technologies for a Smiths Detection-engineered checked baggage threat identification system.

Analogic will focus on the development of new high-precision CT components to be incorporated into this system. The development cost will be absorbed within Smiths Detection’s ongoing R&D spend over the next two to three years.

The new scanner will maximize both detection and throughput capabilities to help meet increasingly stringent international security requirements and allow easy integration into advanced baggage-handling systems.

We are pleased to announce our new relationship with Smiths Detection, a recognized leader in the aviation security field,” Jim Green, Analogic president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. “This agreement reflects our ability to provide next- generation technologies that address the evolving terrorist threats, enhancing security for air travelers worldwide.”
