Last week RMD Research was awardedtwo contracts worth $3.65 million by DHS’ Domestic Nuclear Detection Office to develop gamma and neutron radiation detectors.

The first contract, worth $2.15 million, comes as part of DHS’ continuing efforts to fund companies engaging in research that could lead to dramatic advances in radiation detection technology, while the second contract is valued at $1.5 million and comes as part of the government’s Small Business Innovation Research program, which is designed to stimulate nuclear threat detection programs.

“We are beginning to commercialize high-performance, dual-mode scintillation crystals designed to identify neutron and gamma rays, which are characteristic signatures of highly enriched uranium and weapons-grade plutonium. The DNDO contracts we are announcing today will help to expand our product commercialization efforts and drive further technology innovation,” said Steven Ruggieri, the president and CEO of Dynasil, RMD’s parent company.
“Dynasil is proud to play a key role in the DNDO’s mission to develop technology that enhances our country’s capability to detect nuclear and radiological materials that threaten the United States,” Ruggieri added.
